A sculpture of Marbled Murrelets, hand-carved and painted in oils by artist and activist Joyce Volmut of Sequim. The birds are crafted from basswood; the base, in cherry. "Because it spends its life at sea and breeds in old growth forests, the Marbled Murrelet is intimately connected to the health of these two ecosystems; a thriving population indicates healthy oceans and pristine forests. Sadly, neither is true and its numbers are plummeting. After decades of logging old growth forests, polluting marine waters, and depleting once abundant fish species, they have been pushed to extinction and are listed as endangered species in Washington, Oregon, and California."
